Inspiration from our programs 


While our surveys and awards tell us we are making a positive impact in our community, it is nice to hear stories as told by our staff and volunteers who work directly with our young people. In this issue, you will hear and see what R.O.C.K. life is like at our programs. Enjoy! 

A Day at Skill Drills

I am never quite awake enough when I reach Skill Drills on Saturday mornings. With my coffee mug firmly attached to one hand, I climb the stairs to the gym and take in the scene. Usually there are already kids passing around the basketball, families hanging out on the bleachers, and R.O.C.K. staff rustling around in closets trying to get things set up. They hardly notice my groggy entrance.

Before long, I position myself behind the sign in table, greeting families, kids, and volunteers as they trickle in from the outside. The children are attracted to one another like magnets. It is the adults that sometime need direction. The kids instinctively know that they are there to play. They grab basketballs from the bin and try to make baskets in the impossibly tall hoops for their tiny elementary school bodies.

Meet Eddie

He is a Skill Drills volunteer that has consistently shown up on Saturdays throughout the session. I knew I wanted to interview him for our newsletter when he told me one weekend that he valued volunteering at Skill Drills a whole lot more than simply sleeping in. He felt like his weekends were more productive and positive when he began it with Skill Drills. I could relate.

We are excited to announce our first ever, Official SF Homebrew Competition and Tasting.  Featuring a home brew competition, food, silent auction, raffle and lots of fun San Franciscan’s coming together in the spirit of drinking beer, it is sure to be a great time.  All proceeds benefit R.O.C.K., so join us to drink for a good cause!
